FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
YELLOWHAMMER FESTIVAL BRINGS TUSCALOOSA’S FIRST PEDAL-POWERED MUSIC AND ARTS EVENT
Date: Sunday April 3, 2016 Time: 2-8:30pm Location: Tuscaloosa Rivermarket, 1900 Jack Warner Pkwy, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401
Tuscaloosa, Ala. - The University of Alabama’s Creative Campus, Student Government Association (SGA), University Programs (UP) and The Tuscaloosa River Market will host the Yellowhammer Festival on Sunday, April 3 from 2-8:30 p.m. This event will feature the music of Sister Hazel, Wray, Shaheed & DJ Supreme, Looksy and the Doctors and the Lawyers on a stage powered by the people. Yellowhammer seeks to show the power of alternative energy, and will use a system engineered by Oakland’s Rock the Bike to pedal-power the sound and lighting at this family-friendly event that is free and open to the public. The festival is rain or shine.
"This event is unique to this community because festival go-ers will pedal bicycles to power the stage and lighting,” Hannah Maclnnis, a UA senior and one of the student organizers, said. “Recycled art and bicycling are some of the activities at the festival that will encourage the community to envision creative sustainability, while enjoying good vibes and good music.”
The Yellowhammer Festival will feature interactive activities, booths with community and campus organizations, and a kids corner. Festival-goers are encouraged to consider more environmentally friendly options of travel like carpooling, free campus shuttles, biking or walking. Limited parking will be available at the Rivermarket and surrounding parking lots.
“The organizers have curated local bands playing rock, hip-hop, jazz, folk, and even some experimental music that will appeal to festival-goers of all ages,” Michael Day, a UA junior and SGA’s Yellowhammer team lead, said. “This festival is a way to show the strength of the local music scene.”
Yellowhammer, the brainchild of the Creative Campus student intern think tank, strives to foster community-wide engagement through immersive art experiences and creative efforts toward better sustainability, health and arts awareness on campus and in Tuscaloosa.
